Detroit/Chicago people, sup?

Hey,

As some of you guys know, I’ve been trying to look for a new job. I want out of Lawn Guyland/NYC area. When I visited my friend in Detroit a couple months ago he suggested moving there would be a great fit for me. Thing is, I’m not moving anywhere until securing a full time job there first. Another friend who grew up in Chicago told me to apply to places there as well.

Right now I do video editing for live sports and the pay is poop + weird hours and it’s not challenging at all. I can do Photoshop stuff, Unity 3D for VR and some augmented reality, but I am in no means a developer of any kind and I don’t enjoy programming. I’m more of a content creator and digital designer than anything else. I don’t necessarily specialize in one thing but I can finagle my way around getting the job done. And I’m tired of going to useless career fairs and job meets that don’t go anywhere “Yeah, just apply on our website!”

And those hundreds of job applications, etc. I hate writing countless cover letters and I’ve redone my resume many times with the advice of designers and family members, friends, and people on Oppo/ex-Oppo.

If anyone knows something up my alley or a good place to start please let me know. You shall be rewarded with RGB Miata sandwiches.

No idea if this would be of any use to you or not (I’m very much NOT a tech expert, but guessing “no”), but I literally just got an invite to this, so you can check out the site at least.

PS - Chicago really is a great city, although winters are bleah. Awesome in the spring/summer/fall, no worse than NYC in the winter (probably less snow really).

Move to Chicago, I lived there for 13 years and it was freaking great. I always miss it now, but when I visit next I could visit all of y'all and oh boy that is not gonna end well :)

Thanks man! I think that event actually conflicts with another event on my schedule, will have to check. One of my closest friends grew up in Chicago and she told me it’d be right up my alley. I do not mind winters at all and prefer it to 95F + humidity. Plus, deep dish is so good.

I got that from my cousin (we are both currently unemployed), and she plans to attend July, but I think that I have a conflict that day.

If anything changes, I’ll go to the July one, and if not, then the August one.

Grand Rapids, MI is smaller than Detroit, but is pretty much building itself for the 21-45 crowd. I moved here after college from the Detroit area and I don’t miss the east side. Detroit itself is cool but aside from a few suburbs further north and Dearborn to the west, the suburbs are so bland and same-y. West side is best si de.
